SAINT JOSEPHINE BAKHITA: SLAVE AND SAINT

The life of Saint Josephine Bakhita is an admirable one. At the age of seven she was abducted by two Muslim slave traders in South Sudan. She then spent several years in continuous torment, being sold and resold as a slave and suffering ill treatment from various masters. Finally she was rescued by the Italian consul Legnani who took her to Italy. She was thus able to know freedom and above all she had the opportunity to get to know the Christian faith in depth and she was happy to know that she, a poor African slave, through baptism had become a daughter of God.
