Music in Theory and Practice is a text developed over several years for a one-semester course, Music in Theory and Practice, at the University of Dayton. The book provides a concise and comprehensive overview for non-music majors, music minors, and secondary school students in ensembles, music theory classes, or private music lessons. It may also serve to assist the new college music major who has had only a limited introduction to music theory. The work includes a summary of the components of music, concise explanations of many of the processes of music theory, a brief overview of musical styles throughout history, and short introductions to atonality, twelve-tone music, chance music, microtonal music, impressionism, jazz, and pop chord charts. Exercises and charts are included to make studying fun and practical.
