Originally published in 1872, Around the World in Eighty Days imagined for readers the possibility of circumnavigating the world when the prospect of such a feat was still in its infancy. After an argument with colleagues at London’s Reform Club, the wealthy Phileas Fogg wagers £20,000 that he can circumnavigate the globe in eighty days, and then sets out that very evening with his servant Passepartout. A series of adventures on the seas and rails—as well as the presence of a detective from Scotland Yard who mistakes Fogg for a wanted criminal—provide readers with intriguing plot twists along the way.
