A drama told in a documentary-like fashion by director Andrew Dominik, Chopper tells the story of Mark "Chopper" Read, a onetime soldier who finds himself in jail for a kidnapping attempt. While in maximum security, he becomes a cult figure for his ability to withstand great pain and for his attempts to motivate a power struggle. One day he is attacked by his own crew and stabbed nearly to death, but slowly recovers; fearing further retribution, he has an inmate slice off part of his ears, rekindling his cult status in prison. Eight years later, Chopper is released and finds himself an unlikely accomplice to the police as a one-man arsenal out to fight criminals. But soon he finds that a contract has been put out on him. When killing a man one night out of anxiety, he uses his storytelling abilities to keep himself free of the charge of murder. Charged for another offense, he returns to jail and emerges as a cult figure and unlikely novelist, with a reputation as Australia's number one hit man. The feature stars Eric Bana as Chopper, as well as Simon Lyndon, Kenny Graham, and Vince Colosimo.
