The Office of Research Education at the CU School of Medicine continues its 2025 partnership with the Tattered Cover Book Store on November 18, 2025, with a presentation entitled "Trendy toxins (BOTOX, CBD, etc): The Unknown Side of Modern Wellness."

Mikaela Follmer (PhD candidate) and Emily Bates (Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics - Developmental Biology), who are both members of the Cell Biology, Stem Cell & Developmental Biology PhD Program, will talk about how the modern wellness culture advertises that we can fix everything from anxiety to aging with naturally occurring substances like cannabidiol (CBD) and BOTOX. Many feel comfortable with these natural remedies, so they are used during pregnancy.

What do we know about how these treatments affect the development of babies we carry? What can we learn from fetal development about their effects on adult health and wellness?

Join us for a conversation focused on how we investigate these questions and what it means for our human development and health.

The event will occur at the store at 2526 E. Colfax Ave., Denver, starting at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, November 18th, 2025.
