OPENBOOK returns for a second year as part of Tattered Cover’s ongoing Prison Project.
OPENBOOK is an opportunity for customers to give the gift of reading to persons in incarceration within the Colorado Prison System. It takes the form of a book drive. All books purchased are given to Colorado Dept of Corrections at the end of the drive for distribution among the 22 facilities that make up our statewide system. The Prison Project is founded on a simple premise: that books open a path to a better future. As booksellers, we believe that reading leads to empowerment and empathy, allowing each and every one of us to make more of our lives. Clearly that is a sentiment that resonates with our customers who, in 2021, contributed almost 900 new books to prison libraries across Colorado.
We are indebted to the dedicated staff of the State of Colorado Department of Corrections for their support and guidance. We would also like to record our gratitude to Denver-based non-profit organization Remerg. The mission of Remerg is “to stop the revolving door of recidivism, one resource at a time.” Its vision is of “a world where people released from incarceration find success and never go back.” It is our hope that the OPENBOOK initiative–in its own small way–lends nourishment to those ideals.
Purchases are not tax-deductible.
Our OPENBOOK Prison Book Drive runs until October 10th.
To participate in the Drive books must be ordered from the OPENBOOK Wishlist. If you encounter difficulty in placing an order, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
