We Cancerve Children's Libraries
In December 2020, We Cancerve Movement, Inc. Founder Grace Callwood, age 16, was named a "Frontliner" of the We Are Family Foundation's Youth to the Front Fund. With her grant, she will build free community libraries throughout the Greater Harford County area to promote diversity and inclusion through literature for children and teens in transitional neighborhoods. These neighborhoods consist of low-income and otherwise affordable housing, including transitional units for previously homeless families. Because public school libraries throughout the county have been closed since last March, and public libraries, although providing services to the community since June, are not open to the general public, the community's most vulnerable children face the highest risks of not accessing recreational reading materials. By creating tiny, community-accessible libraries in safe, high traffic locations, We Cancerve intends to bring happiness to area youth and teens through literature. With support from the Harford County Public Library's Friends of the Havre de Grace Library, We Cancerve opened indoor children's libraries in 2019 at the St. Agnes Hospital Pediatric Emergency Room in Baltimore; Department of Social Services Visitation Center (foster care) in Bel Air and Hall's Cross Roads Elementary School Community Resource Center in Aberdeen.
