ABOUT THE AUTHORS
SHANNON & DEAN HALE: Shannon and Dean Hale are the husband-and-wife writing team behind the graphic novels for middle grade readers, Rapunzel's Revenge and Calamity Jack, both illustrated by Nathan Hale; the Newbery Honor-winning Princess Academy as well as The Goose Girl, Enna Burning; and the Princess in Black series for youger readers. Newbery Honor author Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham joined forces with Real Friends, a graphic memoir about how hard it is to find your real friends--and why it's worth the journey. The Hales live in Salt Lake City, Utah with their children and their pet: a small plastic pig.
LEUYEN PHAM: LeUyen Pham is the New York Times bestselling illustrator of many books for children, including God's Dream by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Douglas Carlton Abrams and Aunt Mary's Rose by Douglas Wood, as well as the Freckleface Strawberry books by Julianne Moore. LeUyen worked in animation before turning to children’s books. She wrote and illustrated Big Sister, Little Sister and The Bear Who Wasn't There. LeUyen Pham lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband.
ABOUT THE BOOK: The Princess in Black and the Science Fair Scare
It’s mayhem at the science fair! A squishy goo monster is a challenge for the Princess in Black — but luckily some science-loving princesses are on hand to help. Princess Magnolia is excited. Excited and nervous. She’s going to the Interkingdom Science Fair today to present her poster about seeds and plants, and when she arrives, she sees that her friends are there too! Princess Honeysuckle made a mole habitat, Princess Sneezewort has built a blanket fort, and Tommy Wigtower has a talking volcano that’s saying “EAAAAT!” Wait, what? A surprise goo monster makes this a job for the Princess in Black, and the Princess in Blankets is on the scene to lend a hand. But will two masked heroes be enough to save the science fair? A little scientific problem-solving — and a lot of princess power — will make the sixth entry in the New York Times best-selling series a smash hit.
LENGTH & TOPIC OF PRESENTATION
45 minutes, including Q&A. Topic: Princess in Black and the Science Fair Scare AND:
Shannon and Dean will be doing a science experiment (description below) and will be bringing along a glass bottle. I will be sending along matches for the experiment so you will not need to purchase any, and they should be arriving with two eggs per planned presentation/event. If you have two school visits and a public event in one day, they will have six eggs total on them. If you have ANY questions about this, let me know and I’ll be glad to answer them!
Use a match to light the end of a strip of paper on fire. Lift the egg off the bottle, drop the paper inside with the flame down, and quickly replace the egg. Watch the egg wiggle a little in the bottle mouth, and then get sucked inside!
