DATE OF SCHOOL VISIT
Monday, March 6, 2017 (Sean will visit two schools; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.)
WHY HOST SEAN? This book will appeal to kids who love sports, but might need a push toward loving science. Sean’s an experienced and dynamic presenter who finds ways of taking scientific exploration and applying it to familiar and fun scenarios – in this case – sports! This program will appeal to lovers of science, lovers of sports and those who need a little push to loving science! The book received a rave review from the National Science Teachers Association: “This clever and very innovative book is fun to read and would appeal to kids who are interested in sports and science. The author writes in a conversational style between him and the students. His writing is engaging and he uses much appealing humor. A glossary is included at the end. The published edition will have two colors, complete art, and possibly other minor changes. However, I feel this is outstanding and will very likely be exceptional.”
ABOUT THE BOOK: The Book of Wildly Spectacular Sports Science: 54 All-Star Experiments
Ever wonder how Michael Jordan seems to float through mid-air on a dunk? Or how bike gears help you ride uphill? Do you want to turn these examples into learning opportunities? Inside the pages of The Book of Wildly Spectacular Sports Science: 54 All-Star Experiments, readers will find 54 awesome, hands-on experiments that demonstrate the scientific principles powering a wide variety of sports and activities. Using common household objects, each project includes step-by-step instructions, tips, and a detailed explanation a.k.a. “slow-mo replay" of why the experiment worked and how it relates to the real sport.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sean Connolly has written more than 50 books for children and adults. His lifelong fascination with Fenway Park’s Green Monster, coupled with years of trying to master the one-handed backhand and the simple two-putt, have taken him to the border of where sports, science, and wonder meet. An American, he lives in Bath, England. Sean is the author of The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science, The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science, The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math, and other books for children. He is the father of three, and loves doing science experiments with his kids.
LENGTH & TOPIC OF PRESENTATION
Sean will need about 40-45 minutes to discuss and demonstrate the scientific principles powering a wide variety of sports and activities. He would love student participation (with the students being chosen before he gets there; 4-5 students preferred). He typically gets through about 5-7 experiments. Then he’ll take questions from the kids.
He’ll plan to discuss the following topics and demonstrate 3 of the corresponding experiments from the book:
- (page) 26: Why Throw Forward Passes in a Spiral? (Football)
- 38: How Do you Trap a Soccer Ball?
- 60: Chopping Wood with Your Bare Hands
- 72: How Do Dancers Use Muscle Memory?
- 98: How Do Figure Skaters Spin so Fast?
- 152:Why Can’t You Sprint for a Whole Marathon
- 174: Can you Tightrope Walk at Home?
- 194:Why are Tennis Balls Fuzzy?
SCHOOL TYPE & GRADES
Elementary school or middle school preferred; age range: 9 – 12; grades 4-7
DESIRED # OF STUDENTS
A minimum of 75 students -- or more.
Sean will bring his own supplies, but will need a table (preferably a long one) for the experiments. He is all about keeping things “hands-on”. If he does a larger group (auditorium setting), he’ll need a microphone of course. Otherwise, it’s not needed.
Tattered Cover will design an order form that the school should distribute in advance of the author visit, and again on the day of the event to all student attendees.
