Kathleen Pelley

Kathleen Pelley was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but spent most of her childhood summers playing on her grandparents’ farm in Ireland. Her passion for stories stemmed from listening to them on the radio during the BBC children’s story hour. Later, her gentle Irish father fanned the flame even more by feeding her his tales of fairies, leprechauns, and banshees.  She is the award winning author of six picture books, three of which were named Bank Street Best Books, two of which were Colorado Book Award winners, one of which was a NAPPA Award winner for CD narration by author, and one of which won a Bock Book award for fostering Franciscan values as well as  a Storytelling World Honor Award. Tapping into her experience as a storyteller at inner city school in Denver for twenty years, Kathleen enjoys sharing her passion for stories with people of all ages.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Happy Mamas (Mamis Felices)
With rhythmic, playful language and charming watercolor illustrations, this happy romp pays tribute to all kinds of human and animal Mamas as they mother their little ones over the course of a day - feeding her little ones bundles of bamboo shoots; teaching her calf how to trumpet loud a jungle cheer; playing peek-a-boo; watching her chicks fly from the nest; singing a serenade to the man in the moon; or crooning lullabies through the deep, dark woods. But as the moon glows and the stars shine, what is it that makes all Mamas happiest by far? Join these Happy Mamas and their babies in forest, jungle, snow, field, and beyond, and see how universal a mother’s love can be. Preschool – 1st Grade.

Presentation: Linking Literature to Life – Why Reading Aloud to Our Children will Change their Lives Forever
Kathleen presents first to the parents on the value of reading aloud (children are engaged in a literacy activity in another room).  Then the children join their parents as Kathleen does an interactive read aloud with them,  using her book, Happy Mama,  and thus providing the parents with a  “model” of how best to read aloud.  Story Hour Kit available as well as a hand out for parents on tips for reading aloud. (This can be tailored to meet your school’s particular needs.)

Parents and children in grades Preschool – 1

If the audience is children, a max of 30. If the audience is adults, a large group is fine.

Compter/laptop with two outlets (one for flash drive, one for remote control) and PowerPoint, projector, projector screen, microphone for a large group – hands free if possible, Long table to lay out her materials. Kathleen brings her presentation on a flash drive.
