ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Julie Danneberg is the award-winning author of several picture books including the classic, First Day Jitters. She has also written a chapter book and middle grade nonfiction. She is a frequent presenter at both writing and educational conferences. She grew up in Denver and is proud to be a third generation native Coloradoan. An avid reader all her life, her interest in writing blossomed into a full-fledged passion when she began her teaching career. Her first book was published when her own children were small. Recently retired, Julie started out as an elementary special education teacher and later, moved to middle school, where she was both a special education teacher and an English teacher. She loves to travel, bike, hike, sew, and visit schools to talk about writing.
ABOUT THE BOOK: First Day Jitters
It’s the first day of school and Sarah Jane Hartwell doesn’t want to go. She refuses to get out of bed, her stomach hurts, and her hands are cold and clammy. Even meeting the principal doesn’t make her feel better. Young readers will be surprised as they follow Sarah Jane’s reluctant journey to her new classroom.
LENGTH & TOPIC OF PRESENTATION
45-50 minutes. Julie’s standard presentation is a lively PowerPoint that takes listeners through all the stages of her writing process. She shares pages from her writing journal, talks about where she gets her ideas, shows some of her sloppy first drafts and of course piles and piles of revisions. As a classroom teacher herself, she loves to individualize the presentations to support each school’s curriculum.
Writing Workshops: Julie also leads Writing Workshops with smaller groups of students. Often, she comes in and gives her PowerPoint presentation to the entire school and then does break out writing workshops with individual grades. Lessons covered in past Writing Workshop have included: How to et and develop an idea, how to use a mentor text and how to make nonfiction research fun.
School Literacy Nights: For parents. Her presentation, “Creating Readers” uses her background as a reading specialist and a classroom teacher to share ways parents can get even reluctant readers interested in books.
