ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jessica Brody: Jessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started self “publishing” her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples, and electrical tape. After graduating from Smith College in 2001 where she double majored in Economics and French and minored in Japanese, Jessica later went on to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development. In May of 2005, Jessica quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author. Since then, Jessica has sold over twelve novels for teens, tweens, and adults including 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, The Karma Club, My Life Undecided, and the three books in the Unremembered trilogy, the first of which is currently in development as a major motion picture by the producers of The Vampire Academy, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and Slumdog Millionaire. In 2016, she will release two new contemporary novels, A Week of Mondays (August) and Boys of Summer (April), and in 2017, her debut middle grade novel entitled, Addie Bell’s Shortcut to Growing Up, will hit bookstore shelves. Jessica also writes books for the Descendants: “School of Secrets” series, based on the hit Disney Channel Original movie, Descendants! Jessica’s books are published and translated in over twenty foreign countries. She currently splits her time between California and Colorado.
LENGTH & TOPIC OF PRESENTATIONS
MIDDLE SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS: In her engaging, humorous and poignant multi-media presentation, Jessica Brody takes students on a journey through her rocky and indirect path to becoming a published author (with many pit stops along the way). Making light of her setbacks and challenges, Jessica illustrates the true meaning of the old adage, “Every dark cloud has a silver lining” and through examples from her own life, proves to teens (and adults alike) that sometimes good things come in not-so-good packages and opportunities are often hiding in plain sight... if you have the courage to look for them. This presentation length is adaptable from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS: In this fun, interactive presentation, Jessica guides students through the process of creating an engaging story using brainstorming games, fun writing exercises, and examples from her own books as well as popular novels and movies. Jessica also takes the students on a hilarious journey down her (not-so-straightforward) path to becoming an author, complete with many unexpected stops along the way. The length of this presentation is adaptable to fit school schedules.
SCHOOL TYPE & GRADES
Middle School, grades 6-8 AND High School grades 9-12
DESIRED # OF STUDENTS
Jessica can speak to small groups of students to huge school-wide assemblies.
Showing book trailers can be really helpful to get kids excited about the books, the author, and the visit in general. These, in particular, are produced like hig-end movie trailers. (Jessica comes from Hollywood! Here's a link to the making of the 52 Reasons To Hate My Father book trailer... it's absolutely facsinating and helps connect reading, movies, and future occupations as well. Jessica says, "Unfortunately I only have these three. They’re SO time consuming and expensive. I wish I could do them for all my books, but then I wouldn’t be able to write the books! Each trailer takes about 3 months to complete. I write, cast, direct, and edit them all myself... along with a crew of about 5-7 people. ")
Projector, screen, and microphone to hook up to laptop. No sound. (If it’s a smaller group of kids in a smaller setting, no mic needed.) And a bottle of water.
Tattered Cover will design an order form that the school should distribute in advance of the author visit, and again on the day of the event to all student attendees.
