"James Hannibal was an amazing visiting author. He not only shared his love of writing and process but his back story really engaged so many students-especially the boys. I had many reluctant readers lined up for Lost Property Office and my staff could not say enough good things about how he really reinforced all the concepts they are teaching. Many student writers utilize his concepts and feel more confident in their own writing process. We love, love, loved him and his wonderful family!"

JAMES R. HANNIBAL is no stranger to deep dark secrets or hunting bad guys, having served in the US Air Force as a stealth bomber pilot and a Predator mission commander. Like Jack Buckles, James “suffers” from synesthesia, an intersection of the senses that was once considered mental illness and often causes hyperobservance. If you bake him a cake, he might tell you that it smells blue and sticky—and you should take it as a compliment. He is also the award-winning of author of adult military thrillers. James is very energetic with young audiences. James suffers from synesthesia, the same ailment that (though never named) the central character Jack Buckles has. The book has also been optioned for film by Sony Pictures. Visit James online at

The Fourth Ruby (Book #2): Jack and Gwen are back in this dynamic follow-up to The Lost Property Office. It's been a year since Jack Buckles discovered the Keep beneath Baker Street, an underground tower no Section Thirteen was ever supposed to see; a year since his dad fell into a coma. Nothing has been the same since. Jack's tracker abilities are on the fritz, Gwen's not speaking to him and, what's worse, there's a pounding voice in his head calling for "the flame." Jack and Gwen are framed for the theft of a historic crown jewel--the Black Prince's Ruby, one of three cursed rubies said to bring knowledge, loyalty, and the command of nations to whomever wields them all. Now, they must retrieve the other jewels before the true thief does, or risk unleashing a reign of terror unlike anything history's ever seen.

The Lost Property Office (Book #1): Thirteen-year-old Jack Buckles can find things. Not just a missing glove or the other sock, but things normal people have long given up on ever seeing again. If only he could find his father, who has disappeared in London without a trace. But Jack’s father was not who he claimed to be, and was instead a member of a secret society of detectives that has served the crown for centuries—and membership into the Lost Property Office is Jack’s inheritance. Now the only way Jack will ever see his father again is if he finds what the Clockmaker is after. And that is the Ember, which holds a secret that’s been kept since the Great Fire of London.

The more the better!

45 minute presentation. Topic: story creation. Together James and the students build a story together, turning beginning-middle-end into an orphan-wanderer-leader-hero structure.

Projector and screen to display a PowerPoint presentation, microphone, a whiteboard and markers. And, a bottle of water.

Tattered Cover will design an order form that the school should distribute in advance of the author visit, and again on the day of the event to all student attendees.

Link to share with students and their families to order James' books: Please make sure anyone ordering online includes the name of your school in the Notes section of the order and if they'd like to pick up the book from you at the school. Please DO NOT give a book to someone who says they ordered online unless they have the printed confirmation. PLEASE KEEP THIS! You'll need to include these confirmations when returning the leftover books so you won't be charged for them! If they do ask you for a book without a confirmation, just email me the name of the student and parent's name and I can check.
