A Classical Education Gave Jane Austen:
* The Thrill. A spy entering enemy territory, she secretly learned the languages forbidden to women, Greek, and Latin.
* The Legends. Stealing the treasures of classical literature, she smuggled them into her novels.
* Immortality. Jane Austen wrote in the horse-and-buggy days, before the car, the pill, and the computer. Yet her characters seem as alive today as when they first stepped off the page.
Dr. DeForest, who has published many articles on classical and modern literature, has also teamed up with computer programmers to create the Latinometer, Stellar Speller, and MedWordMaster.
When she is not writing or teaching, she bicycles the river trails of Denver.
