Ebony Flowers with Julia Torres - Hot Comb

A Collection of Stories Offering a Glimpse Into the Lives of Black Women, a Graphic Novel Book Talk & Signing

Ebony Flowers, award-winning cartoonist and ethnographer, will discuss and sign her debut graphic novel Hot Comb ($22.95 Drawn and Quarterly), which offers a poignant glimpse into black women’s lives and coming-of-age stories as seen across a crowded, ammonia-scented hair salon while ladies gossip and bond over the burn. Throughout Hot Comb, Flowers re-creates classic magazine ads idealizing women’s need for hair relaxers and products.

Realizations about race, class, and the imperfections of identity swirl through these stories and ads, which are by turns sweet, insightful, and heartbreaking. Flowers will be in conversation with Julia Torres, a veteran Language arts educator who currently serves as a librarian for five schools the far northeast region of Denver Public Schools. As a teacher/activist committed to education as a practice of freedom, her practice is grounded in the work of empowering students to use literacy to fuel resistance and positive social transformation.
