The art of baseball biography is loaded and deep, necessitating extensive time spent with the subject and techniques derived to open memory banks and spark stories. From organizing material to writing in the subject’s voice, the process is unique to baseball literature. For this discussion, we have gathered four established and well-respected authors of recent biographies who will share their processes and experiences getting to know the players whose lives they documented. Panelists are Dave Jordan (Cobra: A Life of Baseball and Brotherhood), about Dave Parker; Joan Ryan (Molina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty) about the Molina brothers; Dan Epstein (The Captain & Me: On and Off the Field with Thurman Munson) about Thurman Munson; and, Mitchell Nathanson (Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original) about Jim Bouton. The session will be moderated by Jason Turbow, the author of three baseball books: The Baseball Codes; Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic; and They Bled Blue His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Wired, among many publications. This session is co-sponsored with the Pandemic Baseball Book Club (www.pbbclub.com).
