BETWEEN THE LINES
From 1888, when the ballad of Casey At The Bat was written by Ernest Lawrence Thayer to the New York Times’ Best-Seller lists of today, baseball fiction has had a way of dropping the magic of the game into our laps. It has inspired such movie classics as Damn Yankees, The Natural and Field of Dreams, and it has claimed a spot on the shelf of great literature—No. 95 on the American Book Review’s 100 Best Last Lines from Novels is “From here on in I rag nobody,” from Mark Harris’s Bang The Drum Slowly.

Tim Wiles, the former baseball Hall of Fame librarian and an expert on baseball fiction and poetry, will moderate a panel that includes novelists Chad Harbach (The Art of Fielding) and Emily Nemens (The Cactus League). The Art of Fielding appears on most lists of the best baseball books of all time; and, The Cactus League has been named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR and LitHub. They will be joined by baseball writer Steve Wulf (Sports Illustrated, Time, ESPN Ret.). Richard Hunt, a professor at the University of Buffalo who once coached baseball in the collegiate division that provided the setting for The Art of Fielding; and, Daniel Okrent, whom Publishers Weekly has called “one of our most interesting and eclectic writers of nonfiction over the past 25 years.” Several of those books were about baseball, but perhaps his most enduring contribution to the national pastime was as the founding father of Rotisserie League Baseball, which helped give us the alternative universe of fantasy baseball. Panelists subject to change.

THE IRON HORSE
Few men stand as tall in baseball history as Lou Gehrig. At the mid-point of a season MLB has dedicated to this heroic yet tragic figure, the authors of the two most acclaimed books about Lou Gehrig....Jonathan Eig (Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig) and Alan Gaff (Lou Gehrig: the Lost Memoir) talk about what they learned about Gehrig while writing their biographies. They will be joined by Richard Sandomir, the author of The Pride of The Yankees: Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper, and the Making of a Classic who will share thoughts about the making of the 1942 film. Moderating will be former Sports Illustrated and ESPN writer Steve Wulf who lives a baseball throw away from where Lou & and Eleanor lived in Larchmont, NY. Panelists subject to change.

HOME AND AWAY
The poles of the magnet that attract us to baseball are the urge to run off and the need to touch home. These two books remind us of those desires. In Moon Baseball Road TripsTimothy Malcolm provides an in-depth guide for adventurous fans who want to explore the places that show off the game at its best. After all, it’s not just about knowing the players—it’s about immersing yourself in the history, scenery, camaraderie and cuisine of baseball’s meccas. Just published as part of the Moon travel series, Moon Baseball Road Trips will help fans get there, get inside and get around the neighborhoods that surround the parks. In Los Angeles, the story is more complicated. Dodger Stadium sits at the site of three uprooted communities. That is the subject of Stealing HomeEric Nusbaum's insightful, probing, and moving chronicle of how a vibrant community of Latino families was sacrificed to enrich one family and manifest a sport's destiny. Moderated by Tim Neverett, the TV and radio play-by-play announcer for the LA Dodgers and the author of the forthcoming Covid Baseball: An Inside View of the 2020 LA Dodgers World Championship Season. Panelists subject to change.

TURNING TWO
Fathers and Sons Playing Catch is the title of a book by Donald Hall, the former United States poet laureate. But it also brings to mind a pair of biographies, written by father and son about two baseball players whose courage and generosity meant a lot to their communities. The first is Clemente, an award-winning portrait of the Puerto Rican legend written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss, published in 2006. The other is the recently published Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, written by Andrew Maraniss that brings to light the player who not only invented the high-five; but, more importantly, blazed the trail for gay professional athletes. Introduced by former Sports Illustrated and ESPN writer Steve WulfPanelists subject to change.

LOCKED OUT
In 1978 Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke successfully sued Major League Baseball to get access to its clubhouses. Melissa, who is writing a book on her experiences entitled (Locker Room Talk - A Woman's Stuggle To Get Inside), will lead a conversation with other women who have covered baseball over the years. They will include Chelsea Janes, the national baseball writer for The Washington Post; Jane Leavy, the acclaimed biographer of Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth, who got her start as a baseball writer for the Post; Suzyn Waldman, who has been reporting on the Yankees for some 30 years; and Alex Coffey, who has covered the Oakland A’s for The Athletic. Have things changed? In some ways, yes, and in some ways, no. Joining the panel will be Jessica Mendoza, a current broadcaster on ESPN and two-time Olympic medalist. Two years ago, the Houston Astros had to apologize to three women reporters after a team executive harassed them in the clubhouse after the Astros won the AL pennant. Panelists subject to change.

TELLING BASEBALL PEOPLE'S STORIES
The art of baseball biography is loaded and deep, necessitating extensive time spent with the subject and techniques derived to open memory banks and spark stories. From organizing material to writing in the subject’s voice, the process is unique to baseball literature. For this discussion, we have gathered four established and well-respected authors of recent biographies who will share their processes and experiences getting to know the players whose lives they documented. Panelists are Dave Jordan (Cobra: A Life of Baseball and Brotherhood), about Dave Parker;  Joan Ryan (Molina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty) about the Molina brothers; Dan Epstein (The Captain & Me: On and Off the Field with Thurman Munson) about Thurman Munson; and, Mitchell Nathanson (Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original) about Jim Bouton. The session will be moderated by Jason Turbow, the author of three baseball books: The Baseball Codes; Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic; and They Bled Blue. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Wired, among many publications. This session is co-sponsored with the Pandemic Baseball Book Club (www.pbbclub.com). Panelists subject to change.

GET A GRIP
Though it may seem so, the 2021 MLB season isn’t just about Spider Tack and umpires inspecting pitchers for such illegal substances. Baseball is back to normal, which means it’s once again unbelievably strange and strangely unbelievable. A panel of baseball experts will examine the game at the halfway point, and try to explain why there are so many strikeouts and no-hitters (10), a potential Triple Crown winner (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.), a throwback to Babe Ruth (Shohei Ohtani) and a 76-year-old manager (Tony LaRussa) who has a team he first managed in 1979 in first place.

The panel will also look back at the shortened 2020 season; and look ahead to what may happen as the rest of 2021 unfolds. Doing all this will be Tyler Kepner of The New York Times, Jayson Stark of The Athletic, John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal, Buster Olney of ESPN, Dan Schlossberg (author of The New Baseball Bible), Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs and a host of others. Panelists subject to change.

(Listed authors will appear EITHER on Saturday or Sunday; and will be available immediately following the session to sign their latest book).

GRASSROOTS BASEBALL
Join Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson and renowned author/photographer Jean Fruth for a presentation and signing of Grassroots Baseball: Where Legends Begin, which celebrates the cradles of baseball talent around the world. Featuring over 250 photographs by Jean and compelling essays about early memories of the game by 16 legendary players, including 14 Hall of Famers, this magnificent book was edited by Jeff with an introduction by Cal Ripken, Jr. and an afterword by Johnny Bench.  Jean has said ".....I've learned that the game is more than just a sport - it is dreams and aspirations for so many youngsters everywhere I go."  The author's profits from the sale of the book go right back into their not-for-profit, Grassroots Baseball. The organization is devoted to celebrating the amateur game of baseball around the globe and growing interest in the game at the youngest levels. This book makes it abundantly clear that there is no place like home plate. Panelists subject to change.
