Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

From the author of The Abortionist's Daughter, a gripping new novel about a raftingtrip through the Grand Canyon that changes the lives of everyone on board. Meet Peter,twenty-seven, single, and looking for a quick hookup; Evelyn, a fifty-year-old Harvardprofessor; and Ruth and Lloyd, river veterans in their seventies. There's Mitchell, anovereager history buff with no qualms about upstaging the guides with his knowledge. There's Jill from Salt Lake City, wanting desperately to spark some sense of adventure inher staid Mormon family; and seventeen-year-old Amy, so woefully overweight that she canbarely fit into a pup tent, let alone into a life jacket. Guiding them all is JT Maroney, who loves the river with all his heart and who, having made 124 previous trips down theColorado, thinks he has seen everything. But on their first night, a stray dog wandersinto their campsite, upsetting the tentative equilibrium of this makeshift family. Overthe next thirteen days, as various decisions are second-guessed and sometimes regretted, both passengers and guides find that sometimes the most daunting adventures on a ColoradoRiver trip have nothing to do with white-water rapids, and everything to do withreconfiguring the rocky canyons of the heart.

Wow. I feel as if I have just read one of the books of the year. JoyceMaynard's Labor Day is simply put: gorgeous. What, on the surface, seems like such a small story: a bleeding man approaches a boy in adiscount store, and he and his Mom take him home for the long Labor Dayweekend, becomes a stunning work on the nature of love andforgiveness. This book made me weep, I'm not ashamed to say. I weptfrom the beauty and simplicity and deep truths contained in its pages.Maynard's prose is perfect. An absolute must read.

The Angel's Game (Hardcover)

By Carlos Ruiz Zafon
$26.95

Published: Doubleday, 6/2009

From master storyteller Carlos Ruiz Zafon, author of the international phenomenon The
Shadow of the Wind
, comes The Angel's Game - a dazzling new page-turner about the perilous nature of obsession, in literature and in love."The whole of Barcelona
stretched out at my feet and I wanted to believe that, when I opened those windows, its
streets would whisper stories to me, secrets I could capture on paper and narrate to
whomever cared to listen . . ." In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a
young man, David Martin, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a
pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of
books and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But
perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep
within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the
previous owner. Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he
struggles with an impossible love. Close to despair, David receives a letter from a
reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to
write a book unlike anything that has ever existed - a book with the power to change
hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, and perhaps more. But as David
begins the work, he realizes that there is a connection between his haunting book and the shadows that surround his home. Once again, Zafon takes us into a dark, gothic universe first seen in the Shadow of the Wind and creates a breathtaking adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy. Through a dizzingly constructed labyrinth of secrets, the magic of books, passion, and friendship blend into a masterful story.
