This month we’ll see the 1950 Max Ophüls classic La Ronde.
Based on a play by Arthur Schnitzler, La Ronde is ideal material for Ophüls, who had a sterling sense for both film construction and the circularities of human life—especially when love and sex are at issue. A soldier spends time with a prostitute, and then with another young lady, and she. . . . A sort of ringmaster presides over these events and he’s played by Anton Walbrook, an actor of uncommon talent. (97 minutes)
