This month we’ll see the 1953 Max Ophüls classic The Earrings of Madame de….

Without telling him, Madame de… (Danielle Darrieux) sells a pair of earrings given to her by her husband in order to pay some debts. That act sets off a circular wave of suspicions, as well as financial and marital difficulties. Director Max Ophüls is little known in the U.S. now, but he’s one of the greatest filmmakers. This delicate, suggestive masterpiece was his personal favorite. (100 minutes)
