Bill Stevens - Muddy's Chronicles: Memoirs from the Last Great Coffeehouse
Jul 17 2009 7:30 pm
Local author Bill Stevens will read from and sign his new book Muddy's Chronicles: Memoirs from the Last Great Coffeehouse ($22.95 Centipede Press). Philosophical coffeehouses have existed across our country for decades. They were hotbeds of liberal ideas, poetry readings, funny smelling cigarettes, and all-night jazz sessions. For over 25 years, Muddy's Java Cafe in Denver hosted the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Micheline, and all of Denver's mayors and Colorado's governors during its redoubtable career. With a lively dialogue of politics, philosophy, and religion, Muddy's also served as a halfway house for runaway teens and a place where jazz musicians came to jam after their regular gigs. Stevens has created an uproariously funny, nostalgic, and bittersweet look at one the west's best-known coffeehouses.
