Austen at Altitude Conference Presentation, Session 1 with Joan Klingel Ray
| Historic LoDo: As part of the Austen at Altitude Conference (www.jasnadenverboulder.org), Joan Klingel Ray, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of English, CU-Colorado Springs, President of the Jane Austen Society of North America (2000-06), President of the North American Friends of Chawton House Library (UK, 2006-present), and the author of Jane Austen for Dummies, will offer two lectures on different aspects of the study of Jane Austen. Session one is entitled “Jane Austen: She’s Not Who You Think She Is.” While readers have long seen Austen as the premier practitioner of the “courtship novel” and more recently even as the founder of “chick lit,” Jane Austen is really a satirist writer—because she cares about the flaws in people and society, and she wants to see those flaws remedied. Dr. Ray will survey Austen’s six novels and talk about how a parson’s daughter living in a quiet country village cast a sharp, critical eye on her society. |
