Sie FilmCenter/Colfax: Join the Tattered Cover Book Store, UCD’s College of Arts & Media, and Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies, hosted by film critic Howie Movshovitz. All programs begin at 2:00 pm. Admission is $1.00. Tickets are available one hour before screening. Parking is avilable in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. This month we’ll see the 1952 Akira Kurosawa classic Ikiru. A colorless clerk in the parks department learns that he has a terminal illness, and suddenly he breaks out of his lethargy and does something both kind and helpful. At his funeral, his co-workers try to figure out why he would have done something so silly and out of character (for all of them)—and they are perhaps changed. Kurosawa’s American reputation rests on his epics, but his social dramas like this one are soulful and brilliant.
