Colfax Avenue: E.J. Dionne, one of America’s most respected and well-known political analysts, will discuss and sign his new book Our Divided Political Heart: The Battle for the American Idea in an Age of Discontent (Bloomsbury). “This is a brilliant book about America’s current political divide. But, more important, it’s an insightful exploration of our nation’s history and our ability to balance individualism with community. That sense of balance has been lost, and this book shows how we can restore a shared appreciation for our historic values.” —Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs and Benjamin Franklin Can’t make it to the signing? Historic LoDo: Dorothy Wickenden will present a slide show and sign the new paperback edition of her bestselling book Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West (Scribner). In the summer of 1916, Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood, bored by society luncheons, charity work, and the effete men who courted them, left their families in New York, to teach school in the wilds of northwestern Colorado. Nearly a hundred years later, Wickenden, the granddaughter of Dorothy Woodruff, found the teachers’ buoyant letters home, which captured the voices of the pioneer women, the children, and other unforgettable people the women got to know. In reconstructing their journey, Wickenden has created an exhilarating saga about two intrepid women and the “settling up” of the West.
