Highlands Ranch: The Highlands Ranch Library joins us in presenting this look at the European Union. Formed in the wake of World War II, the European Union was created to provide a unified trading bloc for Western Europe. As the EU has grown, it has faced obstacles to integration, such as the addition of Central and Eastern European countries and the rejection of a new EU Constitution by France and the Netherlands. Now, years later, the EU faces threats to the euro, the economic instability of Greece, and debates about further enlargement. Join Active Minds as we explore the historical roots of the formation of the EU as well as the economic and social issues that challenge its future. PDF of the Active Minds Lecture Series.
Start: 7:00 pm
Colfax Avenue: Colorado author Traci Jones was awarded the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award for her first novel, Standing Against the Wind. Jones will read from and sign her new novel for young readers Finding My Place ($16.99 FS&G). It is October 1975, and while most teens are worried about their Happy Days Halloween costumes, Tiphanie Jayne Baker has bigger problems. Her parents have just decided to uproot the family to the ritzy suburb of Brent Hills, Colorado, and now she’s the only Black girl at a high school full of Barbies. But the longer Tiphanie stays in her new neighborhood, the more her ties to her old community start to fray. Now that nowhere feels like home, exactly where does she belong? Historic LoDo: Jerome Greene is retired as Research Historian for the National Park Service, and the author of numerous books, including Stricken Field: The Little Bighorn since 1876. Greene will discuss and sign his new book Beyond Bear’s Paw: The Nez Perce Indians in Canada ($24.95 University of Oklahoma Press). In the fall of 1877, Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) Indians were desperately fleeing U.S. Army troops. The army caught up with them at the Bear’s Paw Mountains in northern Montana, and following a devastating battle, Chief Joseph and most of his people surrendered. The wrenching tale of Chief Joseph and his followers is now legendary, but Bear’s Paw is not the entire story. In fact, nearly three hundred Nez Perce escaped the U.S. Army and fled into Canada. Beyond Bear’s Paw is the first book to explore the fate of these “non-treaty” Indians. Request a signed copy: books@tatteredcover.com
