Donald Messer - 52 Ways to Create an AIDS-Free World
Start: 7:30 pm

Colfax Avenue: Local author Donald Messer will discuss and sign his new book 52 Ways to Create an AIDS-Free World ($9.95 Upper Room Books). Based on his experiences traveling and working as founder and executive director of the Center for the Church and Global AIDS, Messer suggests 52 ways people from all walks of life can make a difference in eliminating this pandemic. His simply practical suggestions range from big to small and from comfortable to controversial. They include ideas such as talking about AIDS, fighting hunger, digging a well, practicing “zero grazing,” and decriminalizing sex. A portion of the profits from the sale of this book goes to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (www.theglobalfund.org).

Ken Burns - The National Parks: America’s Best Idea
Start: 8:00 pm

Historic Lodo: Northern Trust and RMPBS join us in welcoming Ken Burns, the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Civil War, Baseball, and The War, as he signs his new book The National Parks: America’s Best Idea ($50.00 Random House), the companion volume to the upcoming twelve-hour PBS series. America’s national parks spring from an idea as radical as the Declaration of Independence: that the nation’s most magnificent and sacred places should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. In this evocative and lavishly illustrated narrative, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan delve into the history of the park idea, and offer a glorious celebration of an essential expression of American democracy. This event is a booksigning only, Mr. Burns will not be making a presentation.
