Active Minds Lecture: The Legacy of World War I
Start: 5:30 pm
Colfax Avenue: As we approach the 90th anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles, join Active Minds for a look at how the agreements made at the end of World War I have contributed to present day conflicts around the globe. In particular, we will examine the way in which the former Ottoman empire was divided and how that relates to disputes that continue to this day. PDF of the Active Minds Lecture Series.
Sara Zarr - Once Was Lost
Start: 7:00 pm
Highlands Ranch: Sara Zarr, author of Sweethearts and the National Book Award-finalist Story of a Girl, will read from and sign her new novel for young readers Once Was Lost ($16.99 Little, Brown). In her third novel, Zarr examines the coexistence of affliction and hope, and what happens when everything you thought you believed - about God, about your family, about yourself - is transformed. Helen Thorpe - Just Like Us
Start: 7:30 pm
Historic LoDo: Helen Thorpe, wife of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, is a freelance writer who has written magazine stories for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, The New York Observer, and Texas Monthly, among other publications. Thorpe will discuss and sign her first book Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America ($27.99 Scribner), a powerful and moving account of four young women from Mexico who have lived most of their lives in the United States and attend the same high school. Two of them have legal documentation and two do not. This brilliant, fast-paced work of narrative journalism is a vivid coming-of-age story about girlhood, friendship, and, most of all, identity. No matter what one’s opinions are about immigration, Just Like Us offers fascinating insight into one of our most complicated social issues today. Request a signed copy: books@tatteredcover.com
