Seventy years of Soviet control of Ukraine ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. During that time Ukraine suffered extensive famines, deportation of its citizens, and repopulation of its country by ethnic Russians. Since independence, Ukraine has aligned more with the West, resulting in escalating tension between ethnic Russians and Ukrainians. Russian president Medvedev has warned ominously of serious consequences if Ukraine joins NATO, and Russia shut off gas supplies to the country in early 2009. Join Active Minds as we explore this very delicate situation. PDF of the Active Minds Lecture Series.
Start: 7:30 pm
Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, the George and Sakaye Aratani Professor of the Japanese American Redress, Internment, and Community at UCLA, and local photographer Carl Iwasaki will discuss and sign the new book Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens: Hikaru Iwasaki and the WRA's Photographic Section, 1943-1945 ($34.95 University Press of Colorado). In the book, Hirabayashi gathers a unique collection of photographs by War Relocation Authority photographer Iwasaki, the only full-time WRA photographer from the period still living. By focusing on the WRA's Photographic Section, Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens makes a unique contribution to the body of literature on Japanese Americans during World War II.Request a signed copy: books@tatteredcover.com
