What is Youth One Book, One Denver?

Youth One Book, One Denver is a collaborative effort between Denver Arts & Venues, Denver Office of Children’s Affairs, Denver Public Library, Denver Quality Afterschool Connection (DQUAC), and the Tattered Cover Book Store. There are two main goals for the program:

1. To bring books to life and help students envision a world of possibility through arts, culture, and reading.

2. To support literacy and help mitigate summer learning loss by engaging Denver youth (primarily ages 9-12) in reading over the summer.

The program offers children throughout Metro Denver a shared reading experience along with fun and educational programming to help combat summer learning loss.

While the focus of the program has been students participating in summer programs in underserved neighborhoods, in 2016 we are growing the program’s public facing side. This year we are encouraging the public to participate in reading the book and attending events throughout the Denver Metro area.

The Impact of a Book

This program will help illustrate the cultural impact that reading a book holds. It’s much more that reading words on a page. It connects through art, drama, writing, music, science, technology, etc. It has effects on social, emotional, physical, educational, and psychological development. It means connections and new ideas, new ways of thinking. It extends beyond just the reader. Beyond the school. Beyond the community. It becomes something bigger, something powerful. This program will show just how that is accomplished, in a fun, easy, and accessible way. Check out all of the Impact Activities you can particpate in this summer! It's quite a list and you're sure to find something near you!

About Book Scavenger

For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it’s the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself, and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game.

Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold’s new game before those who attacked Griswold come after them too.

Why it’s great: A wonderful, engaging adventure and mystery story with a girl and boy protagonist. Tons of puzzles, ciphers, and codes; many connections for teachers and parents to use this as a learning tool and apply it to all facets of everyday life. Great to read aloud to younger readers. Perfect for reluctant readers, too! Buy Book Scavenger now from Tattered Cover!
